Dr. Paul Gaeta, who sits on the Internal Medicine clerkship faculty of the college's regional Ft. Pierce campus, received the Crary Buchanan law firm's first annual Physician of the Year award, which exists to honor primary care doctors, the "unsung heroes" of the Treasure Coast's community.

With the passage of the recent health care reform law, the U.S. looks to face a shortage of over 150,000 primary care doctors over the next 15 years, despite efforts to train more doctors in the primary care field.

Students and faculty of the Florida State University College of Medicine will host Cover the Uninsured Week, a series of events beginning Monday, April 12, as part of a national campaign to raise awareness about the problems faced by millions of uninsured Americans.

In an op-ed for the Tallahassee Democrat, second-year student Natasha Demehri writes that despite the recent passage of President Obama's health care bill, medical coverage for the uninsured still falls short.  Demehri, her fellow FSU med students and the college's faculty and staff hope that the Cover the Uninsured Week events will help raise awareness of the costs -- both human and monetary -- of our country's medical shortfalls.

This past Saturday, the Big Bend March of Dimes held their annual March for Babies in downtown Tallahassee.  North Florida Women's Care's Dr. A.J. Bricker -- a member of the college's clerkship faculty -- commented on the importance of the research being done at the College of Medicine on the link between lack of melatonin and premature onset of labor.

In 2010, the College of Medicine celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its founding.  The main event, the PIMS and College of Medicine Alumni Reunion Weekend, takes place this weekend, April 9-10.  The college's first graduating class, the Class of 2005, will celebrate their five-year reunion as well.

On Wednesday, April 7, the College of Medicine will host a lecture from Dr. Arnold S. Relman, professor emeritus of medicine and social medicine at Harvard Medical School and former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine.  The lecture will be held in the college's main auditorium from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Dr. Relman will discuss the current health reforms that the country needs and how those reforms can be achieved.

On April 3, the college's students held a 3-hour event for the Tallahassee community called "Maximize Your Health."  The students advocated attendees to strive for a more active lifestyle through the day's events and offerings.

The Tallahassee Democrat recently featured the story of College of Medicine fourth-year Jimmy Moss, whose journey to the college was anything but smooth sailing. Despite many challenges, Moss will receive his MD in May, and will begin his residency at the Jacksonville's esteemed Mayo Clinic this fall. A Florida State University and internationally recognized leader in the study of autism-related disorders has been recognized as a Distinguished Research Professor – one of the university’s highest faculty honors.

College of Medicine students, professors and administrators alike attended the second annual student symposium on health professions, which attracted prospective medical students from Florida's colleges and universities. After practicing surgery in Marianna for over 20 years, Dr. Richard Brunner has been named Chief Surgeon at Port St. Joe's recently opened Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf. Brunner's father also practiced surgery in Marianna, the town where Brunner has lived since the third grade.  At the College of Medicine, Brunner serves as an assistant professor of surgery for the rural track.

After four years of medical school, the graduating class of the FSU College of Medicine found out where they'll be spending their residencies after officially becoming doctors. In the college's sixth annual "Match Day" ceremony, seniors opened individual envelopes with their destination listed inside --just as 16,000 other fourth-year medical students did at schools across the country. Dr. Mohamed Kabbaj, an associate professor and researcher in the college's neuroscience field, recently loaned his expert insight to ABC News for their coverage of actor Corey Haim's death by prescription drug overdose.  Kabbaj comments on the lifelong challenge that chemical addiction poses to those who suffer from it.

Richard Nowakowski, an eminent neuroscientist who earned his Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Harvard University, is the new chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the FSU College of Medicine. 

With two grants from the National Institutes of Health, Amy Wetherby, a professor in the College of Medicine and director of the Autism Institute at FSU, is continuing to develop an ASD-specific screener for children 18-24 months old in pediatric settings.

Janine C. Edwards is returning to Florida State to become chair of the FSU College of Medicine’s Department of Medical Humanities and Social Sciences.

Cathy Levenson, associate professor of biomedical sciences at the FSU College of Medicine, is part of a team of Florida State University researchers seeking to fill a gaping hole in the scientific literature regarding zinc.

With Michelle Obama looking on, Elena Reyes received Florida Campus Compact’s service Learning Faculty Award for encouraging lifelong leadership among her students. Reyes was one of the College of Medicine’s founding faculty members and is the behavioral sciences curriculum director and an associate professor.

Florida State University (FSU) recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary of going against the conventional medical school grain. Back in 2000 when the school started, they were among the first to send its third- and fourth-year students out to make rotations with practicing physicians and other healthcare providers working on the front lines.

At 91, longtime medical education advocate Dr. Charlotte Maguire -- who was also one of the College's earliest supporters -- is still helping others learn through her many projects and causes. The Tallahassee Magazine recently shone its spotlight on her most recent efforts in its March/April issue.

The annual Alzheimer's Disease Education and Training Conference, held at the College of Medicine, offered free activities and information to those who attended. Over 200 people visited vendors, attended educational sessions, shared their experiences and learned about all the various kinds of help and support that's available to local caregivers dealing with a loved one's Alzheimer's disease. With a different schedule and 250 more dancers than last year, the 15th annual Dance Marathon at FSU raised over $400,000 for the Children's Miracle Network. Children both at UF's Shands Hospital and in the FSU College of Medicine's Leon and Gadsden county programs will benefit from the funds raised.

The 15th annual Dance Marathon, organized each year by a dedicated group of FSU students, boasted a new schedule this year -- two 20-hour shifts instead of one 32-hour shift -- and 250 more dancers than the previous year. More than 1,500 volunteered total. Money raised -- over $400,000 -- goes to help kids at UF's Shands Hospital as well as the FSU College of Medicine's health programs in Leon and Gadsden counties.
