The small community that HMSS provides for each member is one of the things that I like the most. People care about each other, motivate each other, and love one another. This is one of the great things that HMSS provides. Also, the service opportunities also help each one to have an experience in a variety of events. And the service commitment is important as it teaches me how to be responsible about one service project and how to learn from the experience.
Why do you want to go into medicine?
Throughout my childhood in Egypt, I saw people in the streets who are not only homeless, but also sick with different diseases, some are mental and others are physical. Unfortunately, the country does not provide healthcare for everyone and the public hospitals (cheap ones) do not usually provide the best care for the patients. Seeing this as a child, especially seeing other children who cannot get treated, inspired me to do something for them. At that time, the only thing I could do is give them money, which will never be enough. But now, I can do a lot more for them and for other kids around the world who really need help but cannot get it because of financial difficulties. Being a physician is not about helping their physical bodies, but about caring about them and being there whenever they needed help. I want to be a physician because having lived in one of the developing countries, I know that every small act of love makes a difference in people's life. This is one of the reasons why I want to go to medical school.
