What do you like about HMSS?

One of the key factors that is so important with the HMSS program is the community it creates as well as the community-focused mindset that is present in the program. It brings together a small number of individuals from each grade that are committed to academics and service that support one another in achieving the same end goal. It is not just the peer group that is important to HMSS but also the advisors made available to us that make this program truly invaluable to me. Dr. Campbell and Dr. Foster are legitimately focused on the success of each individual and take countless hours to advice and council each and every individual, whether it be on a needs base or simply a matter of personal curiosity.

Why do you want to go into medicine?

The impetus for why I want to go into medicine is multi-facet and deals with my experiences and my culture. When I was in 11th grade, I had a grade 3 ankle sprain that severely posed a threat to my cross country season my senior year. Without the help of the medical counselling and professionals, I wouldn’t have been able to come back as strong as I did for my senior year of Cross country. And so, it is my desire to help individuals that find themselves in a similar situation as I did. Additionally, I am from a Cherokee Indian background, and much of my family on my mother’s side is very involved in Cherokee politics and medical work. Seeing my aunt practice in clinics in North Carolina has given me a passion to help serve the underserved and rural populations.
