Resident Benefits

The Florida State University College of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program provides a very competitive benefits package, annual Resident Education Allowance, and many tools, resources and support.

Resident Benefits

  • First-year residents moving to the Tallahassee area receive a $5,000 (pre-tax) relocation bonus upon entry into the residency program to defray moving expenses.
  • Free on-site parking.
  • Free breakfast and lunch daily with additional food/beverage allowance for use in cafeteria and on-site cafes.
  • Scrubs and branded jackets are provided to all residents.
  • Gym membership at Premier Health & Fitness, a state-of-the-art workout facility, is also provided as mentioned in our Wellness section of this site.
  • Residents receive $300 per year for approved educational materials, and up to $1400/yr toward Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.

Paid Time Leave Per Contract Year

  • Each resident receives four weeks of PTO each academic year (July-June), with resident discretion to use for personal vacation or sick leave. This includes one week at Christmas or New Year's, split evenly across the residents. In addition to PTO, residents have 5 days each year for use towards Continuing Medical Education (CME). Additionally, senior residents can utilize up to 3 days (over PGY-2 and -3) for visiting other practice locations to learn more about practice styles, health systems management, and to secure employment after graduation.

Insurance Benefits

  • Life, health and professional liability insurance for residents are covered by the program.  
  • Short-term disability insurance benefit also provided ( Max Benefit: $350.00 per week, payable after 14 day waiting period for up to 26 weeks).
  • Dental and vision are also available but not covered by the program.

Fees and Employee Assistance

The residency covers the following fees: 

  • Part III of USMLE or NBOME
  • Florida Licensure Application Fee; Federation of State Medical Boards (EBHAR Report)
  • National Practitioner Data Bank fee
  • DEA Application Fee
  • Professional memberships such as AAFP and FAFP.

In addition,

  • The program will pay exam costs for graduating residents taking the American Board of Family Medicine Exam at the first opportunity.
  • TMH offers all employees many personal resources through the Employee Assistance Program, which is a work-site based program designed to provide both colleagues and employers with solutions to improve health, relationships, stress or job performance—confidentially and free of charge. Services are broad and include things such as mental health coaching and legal or financial counsel.
  • The residency provides membership for all residents into the Capital Medical Society, which in addition to valuable learning and networking opportunities also has a Physician Wellness Program that offers free and confidential counseling and therapy services with a local provider of your choosing.
