Residency Requirements

Rationale

The Florida State University College of Medicine believes that preparation in clinical teaching leads to enhanced learning for the resident/fellow and provides residency faculty with a more satisfying teaching experience. We have, therefore, instituted a policy, based on the ACGME statements below, that residency faculty must participate in activities to enhance and maintain their clinical teaching skills.

Since faculty are expected to be role models for residents/fellows, they should demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide an environment in which the competencies become habits of practice. To accomplish this, there must be a structured program for faculty development that addresses clinical, teaching, research, and leadership skills. Teaching and evaluation of the required Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competencies should be included in this program. Those competencies are:

  • Patient Care;
  • Medical Knowledge;
  • Practice-based Learning and Improvement;
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills;
  • Professionalism; and,
  • Systems Bases Practice

These topics are best addressed in live workshops and residency faculty are encouraged to attend such sessions. In cases where attendance is not possible due to extenuating circumstances, alternative learning opportunities (e.g. on-line modules) are available.

Policy

Requirements for Residency Faculty with a .5 FTE or higher:

Within the first year of employment (following this new policy implementation)

  • 4 hours in the first annual appointment period, two of which should be live

Subsequent Years

  • 2 hours via live or on-line bi-annually

Requirements for Residency Faculty with less than a .5 FTE:

Within the first year of employment (following this new policy implementation)

  • 2 hours via live or on-line in the first annual appointment period

Subsequent Years

  • 2 hours via live or on-line bi-annually
