The annual Alzheimer's Disease Education and Training Conference, held at the College of Medicine, offered free activities and information to those who attended. Over 200 people visited vendors, attended educational sessions, shared their experiences and learned about all the various kinds of help and support that's available to local caregivers dealing with a loved one's Alzheimer's disease. With a different schedule and 250 more dancers than last year, the 15th annual Dance Marathon at FSU raised over $400,000 for the Children's Miracle Network. Children both at UF's Shands Hospital and in the FSU College of Medicine's Leon and Gadsden county programs will benefit from the funds raised.

The 15th annual Dance Marathon, organized each year by a dedicated group of FSU students, boasted a new schedule this year -- two 20-hour shifts instead of one 32-hour shift -- and 250 more dancers than the previous year. More than 1,500 volunteered total. Money raised -- over $400,000 -- goes to help kids at UF's Shands Hospital as well as the FSU College of Medicine's health programs in Leon and Gadsden counties.

The Alzheimer's Project Inc. partnered with the College of Medicine and the Pilot Club of Tallahassee to present a free conference for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Held at the college, the conference aimed to help caregivers find support, counseling, respite opportunities and any other information that would make their lives easier.

Hundreds of people from the College of Medicine and across the Florida State campus filled the atrium Tuesday afternoon to view the work on display at the medical school’s sixth annual Research Fair. The 67 posters – 12 more than last year’s total – represented the work of faculty members as well as students. Their areas of research included stem cells, fetal nerve cells, liver fibrosis, childhood obesity, Vitamins B12 and D, and yoga for breast cancer patients, among many others.

Positive aging will be the keynote speaker’s message at the upcoming Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Training Conference at the Florida State University College of Medicine. The 25th annual conference, scheduled for Feb. 20, is free and open to everyone. It will give the public, caregivers and health professionals the latest updates on Alzheimer’s disease.

Two of the college's students, Tanya Anim and Komal D'Souza, have been awarded scholarships from the National Health Service Corps. Both women will have their tuition and fees covered for the rest of their time in medical school, and each will also receive a monthly stipend of nearly $1,300. In exchange, Tanya and Komal will each spend at least two years in a medically-underserved community.

Although the state of Florida's medical schools are producing more doctors than ever before, many of those doctors must leave Florida, due to the limited number of residencies available within the state. With the problem becoming more well-known, legislators are trying to increase the number of residencies throughout the country and the state.

At the college's second-annual fudge cook-off, over 200 students, faculty, staff and visitors sampled thirteen varieties of fudge and voted for their favorite. Each vote cost one dollar, and FSUCares raised over $875 through vote sales and a fudge auction. All proceeds went to Hogar Quietud, a home for destitute seniors in Tamaulipas, Mexico, where students have volunteered in years past.

Paul Elliott, who founded the Program in Medical Sciences (PIMS) at FSU in 1971, passed away October 24 from heart failure. Elliott's efforts to reach out to the rural and underserved populations of Florida laid the groundwork for the College of Medicine, which continues that effort today. Beginning the PIMS program was just one of Elliott's many accomplishments and contributions to Florida and the Tallahassee community.
